No Such Thing: Chapter I

Number 1:
“There is no such thing…!
It is all fictitious, an illusion if you will.
Everything that is seen, every word that is heard.
Every breath that is felt, every terror that is feared
All the voices, all the pain and all the pleasures…”

Number 9:
“Look up! Look up to the sky and feel the suns on your face.
Feel them burn… Feel your skin absorb the energy. That is reality. And thát is just as much as a reality as they are!”

Number 1:
“Illusions!! Nothing but Illusions!”

Number 3:
“The curtain will fall, it is time… I am truly sorry, Nine… The High Council has spoken…”

Number 9:
“No! Not yet! It… It needs… No… We need more time! They need more time!”

Number 5:
“Time is only a reflection. A reflection of Order”

Number 9:
“But what about the continuation of their existence.”

Number 3:
“There is nothing we can do…”

Number 1:
“Indeed. Nothing. But it also isn’t real, Brothers. It is just an illusion. Why debating over such an unessential matter.”

Number 9:
“Unessential?!? How dare you speak so low over an entire species! If you have not felt Love, does it not exist? If you have never felt Hatred, does thát not exist? How can you say that what you have not experienced, does not exist!!
I know The High Council has a hard time believing there is more out there than we know about. I know that The High Council needs more proof. But if they let me assemble a team, I will assure you, we will obtain it!”

Number 2:
“Nine, you speak of those, yet you failed to bring us proof before. Not once, not twice, but three times! Every time we have granted you permission to gather more information about this so called new species, yet you fail to succeed. Over and over again! How can you assure us you will not fail a fourth time? There is absolutely no guarantee that you can offer us. We have no reason to believe that there is proof that can be obtained. What are you going to do? Abduct a living being? Is that the way The High Council works? I think not!”

Number 9:
“But I am sure it exists. Life force is all around us. It would be egocentric and selfish to believe that we are the only beings alive in this Universe. There are others… I have seen it…”

Number 1:
“No Such Thing! A Figment at best!”

Number 9:
“The Recovery of The C’Hanai. It proves it. Three… You believe me… Please, do something…. ”

Number 3:
“What do you want me to do, Youngling. I have no final say in this matter. If you would recover The C’Hanai, what would it prove? Its data? What would its data prove us? Can we even be sure The C’Hanai can be found? There is no certainty that it landed on that planet. There is no beacon guiding us to its location. There is absolutely nothing that will help us find The C’Hanai. I’m sorry. I can only advise The High Council to wait with their measures as a sign of good will towards the Brothers who were on The C’Hanai. We don’t know they are still alive. It has been too long for us to assume they still are.”

Number 9:
“Yes! What if The C’Hanai did land and there are survivors? Are you willing to let them die? Are you willing to kill them? Because essentially, that IS what you are doing!”

Number 2:
“Order!!! Order!!! This behavior, we cannot tolerate, young Nine! You will need to know your place in this Room! Sit down!”

Number 3:
“One, can we indeed not ask for a little more time? Use this time to honor our Brothers of The C’Hanai. May I advise the High Council about this delicate subject? What if we would find proof of life? What if we succeed? Can this not be very helpful to our cause?”

Number 1:
“How far do we go? How many lives do we need to sacrifice? How many resources do we use to complete this mission? How are we going to fund this… this… trip, what could easily be a figment of one’s imagination. Do you remember how young Nine spoiled our resources? Do I need to remind you about the souls we have lost, because of his persistence?”

Number 5:
“I agree with One. It has been more than a handful missions that brought us nothing but grief. We will not lose anymore Brothers.”

Number 9:
“But I will go myself and only take droids and volunteers.”

Number 3:
“Four? We have not heard your voice yet. Do you have anything to say in this matter?”

Number 4:
“I am in doubt. On one hand I agree with One, we have lost so many. We need to set course for the future. With all the resources we have. On the other hand, we are still not sure what happened to 13 and The C’Hanai. For all we know they are indeed still alive and well. Or maybe kept imprisoned. If so, we need to explore the possibilities to help them. I do think we owe them.”

Number 9:
“Exactly!”

Number 3:
“Again, One, can I advise The High Council?”

Number 1:(sigh)
“… Fine. We will take this to the High Council. But I will not promise anything, young Nine.
Three, I will give you the time to address the Elders in this matter, but I will also express them my skepticism.”

Number 3:
“Thank you.”

Number 9:
“Thank you, One, You will not regret this!”
